Golden rule
Never leave Vinted's payment system. 100% of successful scams involve payment outside the platform (PayPal, bank transfer, direct card). If someone asks you to do this, it's a scam.
The 8 Most Common Scams (Seller Side)
As a seller, you're the primary target of scammers. Here are the most widespread techniques:
The “Fake Payment Received” Scam
How it works: The scammer contacts you to buy your item but asks for your email to "pay directly". You then receive a fake email that looks like it's from Vinted saying payment has been received.
🚨 Red Flags
- "Can you give me your email to pay?"
- Vinted email from a weird address
- "Payment is blocked, please send the parcel first"
- Pressure to send quickly
Protection: Never share your email. Always verify payment directly in the Vinted app (Sales tab).
The “Parcel Never Received” Scam (But They Did Receive It)
How it works: The buyer receives your parcel but claims they never got it. They open a dispute to get a refund while keeping the item.
- Sent without tracking
- No photo of parcel before sending
- No proof of deposit
- Sent via uncertified pickup point
- Sent with tracking number
- Photos of parcel + contents
- Deposit receipt saved
- Using Vinted shipping system
Product Swap
How it works: The buyer receives your item (authentic), replaces it with a fake or damaged item, then opens a dispute saying "Item doesn't match description".
Protection: Photograph the item from all angles with a unique element visible (label, specific flaw) BEFORE sending. Use AI-powered professional photos to strengthen listing credibility. These photos will serve as proof.
Other common seller scams:
- 4. "Payment via external link": Fake Vinted payment link → never click
- 5. Negotiation then ghosting: Reserves item, disappears
- 6. Fake return: Sends back empty parcel or different item
- 7. WhatsApp scam: "Let's continue on WhatsApp" → guaranteed scam
- 8. Phishing SMS/Email: Fake Vinted messages with fraudulent links

The 4 Scams (Buyer Side)
Stolen Photos / Fake Items
The scammer uses photos found online to sell an item they don't own. You pay, you get nothing (or a counterfeit).
Protection: Do a reverse image search on Google. Request additional photos with a specific element (item next to a pen, for example).
“Brand New” vs Reality
The item is described as new but arrives worn, stained or damaged.
Protection: ALWAYS request detailed photos of any potential flaws. Ask specific questions about condition.
Other common buyer scams:
- 3. Counterfeits: Branded item = fake. Request label photos, proof of purchase
- 4. Empty parcel: You receive a parcel but with no item inside

⚠️ Important
This list contains no names (that would be illegal) but behaviour patterns to spot. If someone ticks multiple boxes, be cautious!
🚩 Red Flags in Messages:
- "Can you give me your email/phone number?"
- "I prefer to pay by PayPal/bank transfer"
- "Let's continue the conversation on WhatsApp"
- "Payment is blocked, click on this link"
- "I'm in a hurry, can you send today?"
- "My son/daughter wants to buy it for their birthday" (emotional manipulation)
- Poor grammar or broken English with copy-pasted sentences
🚩 Profile Red Flags:
- Account created less than 7 days ago
- 0 ratings and 0 items for sale
- No profile photo or generic photo
- Empty profile description
- Random username (e.g. user28374659)
- Inconsistent location
🚩 Listing Red Flags:
- Unusually low price (luxury at a discount = scam)
- Professional photos (potentially stolen)
- Single photo for an expensive item
